- GMMDI by Ekman
7/10 Ant Staff review, 01 May 2015
Ekman’s ‘Reform’ 12” was Berceuse Heroique’s inaugural release. In the time that’s past, Dutch producer Roel Dijcks has made a couple of other appearances on the label, one of which featured Breaker 1 2 AKA Greg Beato who shows up for a remix on ‘GMMDI’ -- Roel’s fourth Berceuse Heroique plate, no less.
‘GMMDI’ is a dirty beast with grotty kicks and an endless lost in the night, searching, decayed acidic loop. There’s an appealing futuristic Drexciyan tech-noir feel, albeit if Drexciya were channeling lo-fi Belgian techno via evil dark trance. Proper heads down, 2AM, sinister strobe and smoke gear.
The Breaker 1 2 remix has more thump, with the drums chunked up a notch and a quirky B-movie horror style riff that’s more Casper The Ghost than Pinhead. I’m into Beato’s stuff but the lead melody is a bit cheesy for my tastes which is a shame as I’m into the other elements. Having said that, I’ve no doubt that this will get many a dancefloor shaking.
