Available on 7” vinyl on Sour Mash. Now on their second album Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are doing a bang up job of showing Noel’s softer songwriting side (but please don’t tell him that). Riverman is the third single from Chasing Yesterday, slowing joining the rest of his platinum selling albums. The B side is a non-album track bonus.
6/10 Warren Allett Customer review, 11th May 2015
This single reveals some great, but also not so great song writing skills from Mr. Gallagher.
Riverman, the opening track off Noels 2015 album 'Chasing Yesterday', (a true Oasis named LP!) is a great way to open the album, and as a single stands well with 'In The Heat Of The Moment', and 'Ballad Of The Mighty I', the two other single releases from this album. Yet the A side is up to his usual standards, the B side for me lacks originality, with poor lyrical content, and a track that many acoustic artists would roll out within a couple of hours. What ever happened to the art of the B side? Noel a genius of this, and this can be seen with Oasis's 'Masterplan' LP. But for me this time it was a bit of a downer, yet not a fan of Noel as a person, I am a big fan of his music. If I could review both A and B side, A would retain a solid 7/8, but the B side would slump to the bench at a minor 3/4.
Lets hope if the High Flying Birds do ever come round to another LP, their A and B sides retain strength, not losing imagination resulting in the loss of creative intent.
