12” vinyl on Optimo Music. Dennis Bovell’s production credits insane, with the sheer number and variety. It includes The Slits, Orange Juice, The Pop Group, and Rihanna. Here we have his reworking of Golden Teacher’s Like a Hawk, as well as an unreleased original on the AA side. If you’re into your heavy dub, 808 freak outs, this is for you.

British reggae soundsystem legend Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell was politely asked by Glasgow collective Optimo Music to rework a couple of tracks by Golden Teacher. The result is this rather wonderfully bizarre slice of club-oriented dub, resplendent with sizzling 808 riddims, unfathomable sub-bass patterning and weird-as-hell pitched down vocals and all kinds of musical scree passing through the echo chamber.
Bovell is most known to me for providing the atmospheric grooves behind Linton Kwesi Johnston's dub poetry records- not to mention his production work with the likes of the Slits and The Pop Group. This twelve inch though is strictly hardcore, with a rough-edged spontaneity and a kind of freewheeling structure that's highly suggestive of long-term prolonged exposure to the effects of serious bass and a certain herb.
