A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a Western Vampire noir set in Iran, sounds good right? It’s got a good host of bands on the soundtrack too; White Lies, Kiosk and Radio Tehran feature with music inspired by Tangerine Dream’s creepy, psych sounds and Ennio Morricone’s iconic Western themes. Add some traditional Iranian accordion music and you’ve surely got the full package.

This film was executive produced by Frodo Baggins, which frankly is the most amazing thing to happen in my lifetime; how did hobbit dude afford the expense that is funding a Western noir movie? I don’t know, but here’s the deal: ‘A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night’ is a creepy film with plenty of vampirism and an eclectic soundtrack, so… Death Waltz, anybody?
Despite their synth-splattered chaos and strange sonic diversions, the soundtracks Death Waltz release rarely have this varied a roster of artists; this one’s got some Morricone-influenced overtures by way of Kiosk, some Iranian pop-rock as sung by the sweet-voiced Ali Azimi, what sounds like the Pet Shop Boys making furious techno via Free Electric Band, and… White Lies? Their tune “Death” -- with its synth organ ludicrousness and its driving bassline a la U2 -- came out several years ago, but serves here as part of a myriad gothic sound.
‘A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night’ was obviously an exercise in thinking about film genres transparently, and the soundtrack reflects that: White Lies’ tune goes into another slice of sinister Morricone-influenced debauchery, a score piece with pantomic vocals, fanfare trumpets and marching drums. It’s a disorientating mix, but such is life: noir and full of vampires. Am I right, folks?!

When I first saw Ana Lily Amirpour's A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT at 2014's London Film Festival one of the lingering memories of this mesmerising, cool, monochrome, Iranian Vampire flick was the soundtrack. If Tarantino is the modern-day master of utilising a unique and diverse catalogue of songs we perhaps hadn't heard before, Amirpour continues this trend with a collection of Iranian tunes that sound both immediately familiar yet refreshingly unique, like the film itself. Highly recommended.
