Barricade by ZNR

Eagerly awaiting its 40th birthday, Barricade 3 is being reissued by Superior Viaduct. The debut by Hector Zazou and Joseph Racaille, better known as Zazou ‘n’ Racaille or just ZNR, is a collection of dreamy synthesizers, toned-down guitar shreds, and distant woodwinds. Oozing of ‘70s non-conformism, Barricade 3 is a surprisingly accessible classic.

9/10 Jack 28th December 2017

ZNR's 1977 treasure Barricade is a delightful, accessible yet indefinable, unique album influenced by French composers of the Debussy generation and jazz music. It is primitive yet sophisticated, at first seeming to be a simple concoction mostly using pianos, synthesisers, and winds. There are beautiful melodies by the ream and the arrangements are uniformly clever and quirky, with occasional free-jazz-like bursts. Rarely can a band produce a work of such individuality, wit and light-heartedness.
