When I first saw Shamir I judged him to be some kind of Stromae-hyper-pop type of character but he’s more a MIKA meets FKA Twigs by way of Ariel Pink. The most striking thing however is the catchy pop tunes on Ratchet, great infectious beats which go from smoove R&B to fun candy-pop with Shamir’s androgynous and mellow voice bringing it together for some stellar tunes.

9/10 Jack Customer review, 2nd January 2018
When Shamir's Northtown EP came out it was obvious that the then-teenager had talent. Ratchet explodes that talent into casino-level neon. In "Head in the Clouds," he insists "Just wanna be great/Is that such a crime?" before bursting into a Cut Copy-worthy dancefloor meltdown of synthesizers and melody. The production and songwriting here are top-notch, but what really makes this record memorable is Shamir himself, who spouts charisma like the fountains at the Bellagio spout neon-highlighted water.
