If you locked Jonsi in a room with a smattering of instruments and a loop pedal it probably wouldn't be as interesting as this. However there’s no doubt that his mythical moods are an influence on the young Niklas Rehme-Schluter a.k.a Cass. Magical strives to occupy the space of its title. It’s earnest and beautiful whilst retaining a unique feel. Out on CD from Home Normal.

What is it with Home Normal these days? Their release schedule resembles that of a label that knows the end of the world is imminent and have to get everything out before we reach doomsday. Their other release this week by Fifto knocked Robin off his chair whilst this one by blond bombshell Cass will appeal to anyone who loves softly tipped laptop-tronica. The album drifts lovingly using all kinds of found sounds, scrapes, tinkles and drifting voices to shape abstract but warm electronica.
Opener ‘You On My Mind’ sets you up for the journey with a gorgeously fluttery sample looping over itself before Ulrich Schnauss bass notes nail the track down. it builds beautifully ending in a cascade of childrens voices. So far, so Boards of Canada. ‘Lantern’ is as close as the record gets to tearing a hole in the pop parade - a kooky yet eerie voice sits atop the gloopy electronica giving the feel of an ice-cold nordic Animal Collective.
The mini-tronica style will to appeal to fans of Mum, Tunng, Colleen and Jonsi’s work with pal Alex. It drifts, it tinkles, it twinkles. We’re forever told that big is good but sometimes small things are nice too.
