9/10 Andrew Customer review, 24th April 2015

If you don't know ESG then you must have been hiding under a rock somewhere. The Scroggins sisters a.k.a. Emerald, Sapphire & Gold were an art-funk ensemble from the South Bronx who provided poly-rhythmic dancefloor bombs in the 1980's and then found themselves sampled by everyone from the Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan, TLC to Farley & Heller. They have a fractious relationship with this - hence the 1992 EP 'Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills', however it is perhaps the numerous bootlegs that have probably cost them dear rather than (cleared) samples, which have surely led more fans to their door.

In any case - this is a collection of 3 of their best tracks (in my opinion anyway). Kicking off with 'You're No Good' you get that funky, punky NY disco that falls on the right side of challenging. Next up is 'UFO', a relentlessly tight, uptempo track that will immediately have you scratching your head thinking of all the tracks that have sampled this whilst simultaneously nodding your head to the groove.

On the flip there are two versions of the classic 'Moody' this is surely the groups calling card, its dubby, funky disco groove with the nagging vocal refrain - it just defies you not to nod, tap your feet or just plain get down. The original and slightly extended 'Spaced Out' version are both just superb, the spaced out take adding just a bit of dub, echo and space to the original.

All on lovely splattered yellow, green and blue vinyl - what more do you want?
