One from the ‘90s, it’s Laid, the 1993 album from Manchester group, James. It reached number 3 in the UK charts at the time and was recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Complex and produced by Brian Eno no less. It’s an album of catchy alternative rock tunes which are undoubtedly ‘90s but just as damn good today. It’s punchy, singalong stuff.

When this album was first released, the whole grunge scene was at its peak and 'alternative' music was beginning its heyday. Produced by Brian Eno it is layered with gorgeous, subtle instrumentation, ranging from the hypnotic "Dream Thrum" and "Skindiving" to the upbeat, buoyant "Sometimes" and "Say Something". The lyrics are penetrating and deep, diving into madness, paranoia and even religious meanderings. There is an overarching sound of melancholy but it is not depressing. It is the kind of melancholy that makes you reflect and take flight for a while.
