Inhale The Universe by Plastic Mermaids

A sweet dream-pop trip, a little sparse psychedelica at just the right music, a perhaps unwarranted optimism sounding in the background, that is Inhale the Universe. Plastic Mermaids’ 12” is a great introduction to a band we hopefully haven’t seen or heard the last of. Also: it's coloured vinyl!

The sticker on the front is trying to put me out of a job. “Like Mercury Rev on a road trip with Flaming Lips” it says. Well opener ‘Ocarina’ is EXACTLY that. No need for further words. Brilliant. ‘Playing in Your Mind’, though certainly heavily influenced by the Fridmann production style,  is a rather more commercial sounding track with a chorus which is grand and if you don’t mind me saying boyband-like. Not that much difference between this and a particularly lavish Take That ballad if you strip away all the sonics.

Elsewhere ‘Saturn’ has lots of squelshy synths  and the kind of wibbly wandering melody that is one half the Earlies and one half ELO. You get a bit of trip hop on the Beta Band-ish ‘For Nothing’ and skittering drum and bass drums on the Gorillaz-like ‘Fire Hands’. Its all clever stuff, brilliantly produced and will appeal greatly to fans of big pop movers like Jagwar Ma. I found the songwriting a bit hit or miss with only the first and final tracks striking true but they are aiming for the sky and good on them for showing some blinkin’ ambition.
