This is a wonderful record. It can be described as folky pop with strong 60s influences, but that's like describing Britain as a small island off the coast of Europe: true as far as it goes, but only a tiny part of the story. There is variety, nuance and depth here, in the arrangements, the performances and, of course, the songs themselves: the personal, the political, tall tales and short cuts. The second track, Infinite Kingdom Of Dirt, asks, "Are you feeling nostalgia for the 19th century?" taking a historical sweep before calling out the current political assault on people with disabilities.
The single, S6 Girls, a rather Beatlish-sounding delight, is nothing less than a joyous and sometimes poignant tribute to ordinary young women on a night out, or "on night release", as the song so perceptively puts it. But there's so much more to hear, and it's impressive that the careful work that's gone into crafting the words is also found in the music, with an abundance of hooks, harmonies and swirling grooves.
This is the best new album I've heard so far this year and no, I'm not being paid to say that.
