The only time I've seen a full-sized grand piano with it's workings exposed and an excitable European auteur tinkling inside was when I saw Hauschka live. casually tossing a tambourine onto the bay of open strings and tinkering with little clips and obscure toys and such like to alter acoustic resonance and aural perception. He was a joy to watch and is one of the many modern greats indeed.
Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel are Grandbrothers and have forged a delicious sound utilizing minute electro-magnetic hammers to create soft and atmosphere-drenched modern classical pieces and even more boisterous plonking dancehall groovers. Using their backgrounds as jazz pianist and modern day sound synthesist they've created a lush, fascinating album full of interesting melodies, sparkling celestial funk with this ingeniously modified piano as its centre-piece, all embellished with a dazzling array of smart electronic filters and tricks you can sense them delighting in this huge potential. This is anything but a whimsical CD of tinkled ivories.
There's little else to say about an instrumental piano album. So many even today are boring, chocolate box sickly, staid or in debt to the pomposity of their forebears. This one is certainly not. 'Dilation' demands your interest throughout, is both tuneful, joyous, danceable and surprisingly experimental which ultimately leads us to an incredibly beautiful listen. Some variable moods and remarkable ideas throughout these twelve richly-layered tracks. Gilles Peterson is a major fan and as a man who is a walking encyclopedia of world music I'd take that as a recommendation way above mine.
