'Ain't This a Mean World' is a compilation of tracks from folklorist Frederic Ramsay’s ‘Music of the South’ field recordings, Volumes 2, 3, and 4, originally released on Folkways in 1955 on which Horace Sprott performed. He learned old religious songs from his mother and grandmother and his music has a deep, worldly sound.
