Peerless Atlanta riff-mongers Mastodon have their typically ambitious third full-length reissued on coloured vinyl. A concept album with a mythic slant heavily informed by the writings of Joseph Campbell, ‘Blood Mountain’ features guest contributions from Josh Homme (Kyuss/Queens Of The Stone Age/Eagles Of Death Metal), Scott Kelly (Neurosis) and Cedric Bixler-Zavala (At The Drive-In/The Mars Volta).

7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 20th July 2015
There isn’t really another metal band to rival Mastadon at the moment. They seam to exist in a genre all of their own, one of underground metal that has leeched to the surface and gained critical acclaim.
“Blood Mountain” is a concept album. The concept being based around the things that can happen to you when climbing a mountain or lost in the woods: When hunger strikes and hallucinations come from the delirium. This, then, may explain the cover art and mythical imagery in the lyrics. This is evident in the lyrics of “Sleeping Giant” “Earth has burst/Mountain flames/Moon beheld/Father snake/Mind control/Has left its nest”
The album explodes out of the traps with the blistering drum intro to “The Wolf Is Loose”. The ferocity continues on “Crystal Skull” before the down-tuned sludge of “Sleeping Giant” slows things down a little. “Capillarian Crest” mixes speed metal the intricate prog rock of Yes. On “Circle of Cysquatch” lead guitar line fly around like arrows raining down from 100 bows. Exciting stuff!
