- Cumbia De Donde by Calexico
You can believe me or believe me not but Calexico have the honour of being pride of place above my toilet. Every time I have a piss, it's Calexico I see. I’m not even a fan as such -- I just like some of their imagery. Anyway on that piece of utterly useless information I’ll attempt to tell you about this new single.
It’s not what I expected. Have they always been this influenced by Spanish music? It’s a very traditional type song with chanted call and response vocals but with a modern tint - instead of where I’d expect a trumpet, there’s a stylophone (are we still allowed to use them?). It’s a piece of party fun that you could imagine knocking back the sangrias to on holidays. On the flip is something more like what I was expecting: namely dusty, melancholic and moody alt-country. Very limited, this. Be quick.
