“Oh no, not more ‘90’s emo/slacker/complex-a-pop” I barked in the general direction of our Ian but for once he wasn’t playing some long lost (then) fresh-faced emo-ish album off his phone but it was one of these two re-issues timed to coincide with the moment where people who have enjoyed ‘DSU’ start to wonder what else this wonder kid has done.
If you think that last years ‘DSU’ was a one off and that his earlier work was probably an interesting but scrappy bunch of ideas made while preparing for the big one... well... you’d better start thinking again. These albums are just as vital. Robin has waxed lyrical about ‘Trick’ elsewhere but this ‘Rules’ effort is quite something. It comes fully formed, jam-packed with fantastic mid-fi pop gems that will appeal to fans of Sebadoh, Pavement, Built to Spill. It’s utterly addictive and I feel I’m neglecting it by not highlighting certain tracks but why bother when it’s all great.
This was previously only available on his Bandcamp page and I for one am glad a near travesty has been averted.. he’s been at it all this time and we just didn’t know.
