Following their first collaborative release Complete Spiral, DJ Sprinkles & Mark Fell are back with EP2 and a fresh slice of Tony Benn sampling deep house. Not as surprising as it sounds considering their previous sampling of Arthur Scargill. Rousing stuff. Out on vinyl 12” from Comatonse Recordings.

Anyone who knows me will know that if you are talking housey dub techno there are a handful of names which make my heart go all a flutter. One is DJ Sprinkles the alter ego of multi media terrorist Terre Thaemlitz. This collaboration with sound sourceror Mark Fell follows on from previous high water marks such as ‘Midtown 120 Blues’ by being a close to perfect example of how to make slinky atmospheric dancefloor.
‘Insights’ is a beautifully lush composition with simple drum patterns and warm synth chords. Just the right amount of synth lead is added to provide colour but its sparse, downbeat and playful grooves hit the nail firmly on head. On their previous collaborative 12” they made the unusual step of sampling Arthur Scargill. This time they’ve sampled Tony Benn on ‘Fresh‘. Queer-friendly slinking midwest techno and old school left British politics make strange bedfellows but the preposterousness of the idea works wonders. The clipped micro-house of ‘Fresh‘ is interrupted by Benn’s socialist rhetoric - several clips are used and then he’s gone and you kind of scratch your head and wonder if he was there at all. Fascinating but for me the real musical treat is on ‘Insights’.
