Not the film to educate teenage girls about the First World War through the medium of horses, but Warhorse, epic doom metal band from Massachusetts. Reissued after 14 years and now on vinyl for the purists, this LP of the album As Heaven Turns to Ash also contains their last song, I am Dying. Double vinyl, gatefold sleeve, on Southern Lord.

Their sole album before their disbanding, Warhorse makes sure that they laid down some of the thickest and grooviest riffs ever to be spewed out from the psychedelic void on As Heaven Turns to Ash. Each second of every song successfully taps into the blackest parts of the human consciousness, and it combines elements of early Electric Wizard and Goatsnake, complete with the tundra of thunderous grooves and raw production. From the massive bulk of corrosive doom with “Black Acid Prophecy” to the mournful space rock of “Every Flower Dies…”, Warhorse made certain they they would leave one hell of a legacy before shuffling off this mortal coil.
