The man who plays rock paper scissors and beats scissors with his voice, Mark Lanegan, released new record Phantom Radio last year, a collection of songs that tested out his interest in more conventional avenues -- also, New Wave. That's all well and good, but how about some remixes? A Thousand Miles Of Midnight invites a few old-school producers, such as UNKLE and fucking Moby, and also invites members of Earth in to do a dub mix. A dub mix, by Earth. And so on.

Mark Lanegan released the record he’d always wanted to last year, triumphantly offering us ‘Phantom Radio’, a collection of songs focused around his long-repressed adoration for ‘80s pop, New Wave and gloriously basic electro-pop. And lo, it was good: when you hold down an impulse for that long, it’s always going to be released in a flurry of excitement and artistic abandon, but Lanegan also managed to keep the record tempered by way of his “gravelly” (igneous?) voice and the usual apocalyptic naysaying.
Now, as every electronic artist should, Lanegan gets to be remixed, and a lot: ‘A Thousand Miles of Midnight’ offers fourteen whole takes on his album by artists as relevant (wait no, not relevant. What’s the word: alive) as UNKLE and Moby. About those two: the first one is a gloopy slice of electronica that keeps hold of Lanegan’s voice and crafts a little sci-fi epic of suppressed beats and rising strings around it. Moby, who recently released the rather hilariously titled ‘Hotel Ambient’, offers a more thorough, timestamped beat and uses Lanegan’s vocal as a signature rather than a centrepiece. Which, fine, but: I think we’d all rather the ratio slanted in Lanegan’s favour.
While there are some odd choices on this collection, we also get to hear from some truly good eggs: Pye Corner Audio, who turns “Floor Of the Ocean” into a gorgeously, predominantly ambient song of sound effects that make for a hologrammed version of the natural landscape. There’s also a contribution from doomslayers and recent collaborators Earth, who go right after Mikey Young makes the slickest, silliest cut on the record -- what do Earth do in this situation? They make a fractured slice of dub. Like a lot of full-length remix releases, this feels overstuffed and frantically prepared, but that also feels like part of the fun: Lanegan has long been invested in a myriad ways of making electronic music, and this is a final declaration of that.
