Ryuichi Sakamoto super-imposes different tones and aesthetics onto one another to make the crestfallen clusterfuck that is Bircolages. Through smooth, old-school synth sounds and pastoral samples he crafts an earthy kind of EDM that sounds indebted to both folk and vaporwave -- at the same time, though, he uses ferocious, abrasive sound effects that recall Amon Tobin on ISAM. With a gorgeous, plaintive backdrop and an overwhelmingly chaotic foreground, Bircolages speaks to two different worlds.
