A reissue of the out of print vinyl of 2007’s collaborative album between Black Moth Super Rainbow and The Octopus Project, here we have The House of Apples and Eyeballs, a rather majestic record of swooning psychedelia and storytelling shoegaze. Lots of far off synth sounds crash into vocoder distortion and a constant beat but the array of instruments sound pretty impressive. It’s got echoes of something childish and fun, like Bruce Haack or Melody’s Echo Chamber. Something incredibly interesting has been created here.

Black Moth Super Rainbow and the Elephant Project conceived ‘The House of Apples and Eyeballs’ many a moon ago -- specifically, like, however many moons have passed between 2007 and right now -- opting to bring together their hazy, overdeveloped sounds for a big fluorescent party. If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like for two jazz-inflected psych and electro bands to get together and make music, here’s your answer: would it surprise you to know that the answer is “jams”?
There’s a lot of chaos contained in each of these jams -- enough to make Wayne Coyne throw out the entirety of ‘Embryonic’ and start again -- with the first track flirting with electronica before becoming a percussive freakout. It leads into the Boards of Canada lite “Marshmallow Window”, which toys with IDM and then squirts out some true psych bluster on the outskirts. Both of these bands have a lot of experience playing outside of their comfort zones, so brought together it’s like piling genre connoisseurs upon genre connoisseurs. Luckily, they aren’t thinking about that: they’re just writing songs like “It Hurts To Shoot Lazers From Your Fingers, But It’s Necessary”. It’s not, but this woozy piece of dance music does what it aims to do: suspend all reality and logic for a dance cut out of space. The vocoder is a nice touch, people.
It’s all kind of a mess, this record, and it’ll appeal to fans of both bands, plus maybe to those who enjoy the wilder end of the trip-hop, pop and psychedelic spectrums. Neither band has ever compromised on what they’re doing, and here they combine to become the maximalist power ranger they were destined to become. As their musical motto goes, fill it to the brim or go home.
