Powell’s ‘Club Music’ is subjected to a wee bit of remix action courtesy of Ancient Methods and Richard H. Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire fellow, if you’ve had your head up your bottom for the past 35 years/ just been born).
Ancient Methods ‘Körpersäure 91’ Remix is a straight up EBM style stomper with an elastic, acidic looped bassline and chugging drums forming the foundations of the groove, over which a stuttering ‘1,2,3,4’ vocal sample plays, sounding somewhat like Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy nestled amongst some wriggling acid pulses. There’s a distinctive Belgian EBM/ New Beat flavour that’s faithful to the original and not the all out industrial pummeling I was expecting. The mix isn’t particularly melting my face off bobbing up and down to it sat in front of a computer but rest assured it will have the dancers contorting into shapes the human body is not supposed to make. The ‘Pogo Im Säurebad Remix’ like the previous mix has Powell’s original pallate instantly recognizable, upping the tempo a nudge with hypnotic double kick drum and a big scuzzy electric fuzzy breakdown. I can well imagine a few nutters poging about the dancefloor to this, spilling peoples pints in the process. There’s always one...
Captain Kirk reports for remix duty on the B-side with a Main Mix and Dub Version of ‘So We Went Electric’. The Main Mix gradually introduces the individual elements; constructed from a simple yet effective grinding bassline, clanking loop, sizzling electronics, occasional muffled bubbling vocal fragment and lord knows what else. The Dub Mix dispenses with the beats and monotone bassline leaving space for the other elements to work to ghostly effect.
