- Mezare Israel Yekabtzenu by The Jazz Workshop
9/10 Jacob DVG 1st May 2015
This little gem - possibly the first Israeli jazz record recorded and published - is a wonderful mix of deep, spiritual jazz and clever interpretations of middle-eastern music. If the notes are anything to go by, this was put on tape in a single day.
The track to go to is Ken Yovdu Kol Oyvecha on B2, a beautiful syncopated little excursion, deftly crossing established boundaries with beautiful rhythms and melodies. If this was a Californian University ensemble the original would be fetching prices in the 4 digits, but luckily the good men at Fortuna has put out a proper repress with original cover art and good liner notes.
In an age of division, the musical unity on this record is wonderful.
