A 7” from Kate Tempest, everyone’s favourite British gal rapper, and Loyle Carner, an MC from London town, another of those found through a youtube video, 20 something rappers. Together, Tempest and Carner hit a good, ballsy balance of British grit layered onto a classic hip hop beat.

- Guts by Loyle Carner + Kate Tempest
Rapper, poet and Guardian writer’s wet dream Kate Tempest is one of those artists who straddles genre’s and who seemingly has no enemies. She oozes respect. Those who got on pretty well with this years Mercury nominated ‘Everybody Down’ album should be interested in this very very limited 7”. In a rags to riches story to warm hearts everywhere hitherto unknown London MC Loyle Carner turned up at the Heavenly Social, met Tempest and wound up collaborating with her on this 7”. Their voices go together like cheese and tomato, trading lines over a neat Wu Tang style piano motif, classic hip hop moves with a decidedly English feel. Great stuff. Over on the flip there’s a remix of sorts. The A side is is a pretty strong effort which should be garnering wireless play and this 7” won’t be around long.

kate tempest has found a perfect accomplice in loyle carner. they both display a broad approach to rapping, using a more poetic use of language while still keeping the mitre of hip-hop. it is soothing on the ears in terms of their delivery and tone as well as the thick bass and smooth sound of the beat which carries over to the b-side dub. like all good lyricism this tune will have you checking it many times before you have caught all the lyrics, not due to any lack of clarity but due to its intertwined verses and themes that make you stop and consider what has been said.
