Phil reckons this is good. "Melodic" he says. I wish he’d have bloomin’ well reviewed it then because all I can hear is a cacophony.
These are ‘field recordings’ of the sound of Las Vegas slot machines. Imagine what sort of sound overlapped recordings of slot machines would sound like and you’ve nailed it. A kind of recurring drone with various bleeps and bloops and the odd snatch of dialogue. The A side is higher in tone and more frantic. The B side has more space, you are able to pick out the individual sounds coming from each machine and the excited chatter of the people using them. Rew says that the record is about addiction. He spent FOUR MONTHS doing this, which I guess is an addiction in itself.
After listening for several minutes your ears tune in and the music becomes trance-like, the snatches of everyday dialogue cutting through discordantly. Its an interesting clatter and the picture disc is a bright and vibrant piece of art.
