Hairy folkie Jonathan Wilson has carved out a sweet 'n' tender niche on Bella Union, releasing records of tender Americana with psychedelic undertones. Slide By is another of his typically modest gestures, a mini-LP comprised of covers, honouring artists such as Fleetwood Mac and Arlo Guthrie, among others.

The problem with Jonathan Wilson is that he just doesn’t know when or how to stop songs. They go on for fucking ever. I really liked sections of his ‘Fanfare’ album but everything went on too long. On this follow up mini LP he’s a bit more concise, mixing reasonably obscure covers with a couple of what I presume are new originals.
Arlo Guthrie’s ‘Coming into Los Angeles’ is a driving piece of heartlands rock which recalls Bob Dylan’s ‘Hurricane’. Wilson is an innovative producer and on Great Society’s ‘Free Advice’ he employs wailing backing vocals over the folky traditional sounding song. Works a treat. The remaining cover is a live rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Angel’. Coming from the Bob Welsh era of the band it’s a typical piece of turn-of-the-‘70’s blues rock. For Wilson’s originals you get either folky finger picking - ‘Alpha Blondy Wes King’ - or a heartfelt Dennis Wilson style ballad ‘Slide By’. Not a bad record but definitely an in between albums, obsessive fans only type of thing.
