NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!! It’s already the time of year when indie hopefuls release christmas records ironic or not. I’m still baffled as to why christmas songs are deemed too naff for superstars these days but thousands of second division indie types beaver away all summer writing that to-be-heard-by-no-one christmas song.
Here’s four of them on one 10”. Imagine Lloyd Cole writing a feel-good christmas song backed by a 44 piece string section and you are somewhere close to Beat Hotel’s ‘Christmas Eve’. When they sing “snow is settling outside” I am ready to strangle them but there’s no doubting the chorus packs a Dexy’s like punch. The lady singing Fire Eyes ‘O Falling Snow’ has a voice so high only dogs can hear it so they choose to double up the vocals with a saxophone for us humans to hear. Cheers. They are really going for the Phil Spector thing here throwing the kitchen sink at it but down the plughole it should be plunged.
The Delta Bell do a countrified thing with girl group vocals and a lushly arranged chorus. It’s mawkish, its twee but it’s christmas right? I’ll forgive it. Finally Palm Springs ruin everyones good mood by churning out a misery-fest which is probably the most enjoyable song here despite the sleigh bells. Merry fucking christmas everyone.
