A calming broth of ambience being fed to you by Francesco Giannico. If you haven't guessed, he's Italian and the compositions on Metrophony are based on urban field recordings of the Italian metro. He's added other instruments and post-production bits to give each piece a luscious harmonic substance. It's very swirly, floaty and soft. The CD comes with a load of 'vintage' stuff stuck to it so it looks well old. Out from Time Released Sound.

9/10 Brian Staff review, 13 November 2014

Francesco Giannico is an Italian sound/field recordist who evidently has a passion for the sound and soul of his beloved Rome subways, so much so he's put to tape a 40+ minute eulogy laced with modern classical grace, peaceful post-rock meanderings and rich ambient wonder. 'Metrophony' is a steadily evolving sound tapestry of a soundtrack to an evocative art installation that comes housed in yet another ephemera-loaded, hand-constructed package from TRS. These things make our stockroom seem like a magical place to be for the few days they stick around. You can't really put a price on the painstaking beauty of such fine objects.

There's a real sense of tactility and serenity to this one long movement, a depth and an emotion not heard in a lot of sound installation music; you feel genuinely lost in the time and gradually unfurling mysteries of a place many of you will never visit. The field recordings evoke a gently chattering dream-laden location that could not be more different to our UK perceptions of city subways. These snatches of life mingle flawlessly with the flow of the various embellishements Francesco adds. Halfway-in we get treated to an intoxicating, cerebral guitar and percussion interplay that can only be described as totally sublime. There's a peace, atmosphere and tranquility to this inspirational CD that is almost unsurpassed for me this year, having listened to it four times in 24 hours I will say confidently it's something quite special on an already impressive label.
