7/10 Clinton Staff review, 28 November 2014
A few years ago it wasn’t particularly ‘hip’ to admit to liking The Charlatans but since Tim Burgess gave up booze and drugs and took to Twitter instead, he and his merry lads have become national treasures once again. ‘Talking in Tones’, the first single from their new album ‘Modern Nature’ was ace and a reminder that yes they did have a grab bag of great songs in their locker. This follow up is not as enlightening by any stretch of the imagination but its no disaster.
Its a typical late period effort from a veteran band. Expertly produced, easy on the ear, pretty sweet really but lacking a certain pizzazz. I’m not going to complain at this. Overleaf, Twitter mates The Brian Jonestown Massacre contribute a remix. Once upon a time remixes were the territory of electronic bods but now seemingly anyone does them. The remix would be fine if you hadn’t heard the original as there’s no real discernible difference particularly in that the structure of the song follows the exact same pattern. The drums and bass are slightly boxier and it has more of a lo-fi treatment. Maybe keeping it the same was the remit.
