Aphelion is a fitting title for for this collection on Belgium’s fine Token imprint. The is aphelion defined as the point in the orbit of an object where it is farthest from the Sun. That gives a very clear indication of where these tracks will take you; the dark side of deep space but then one would expect nothing less from a compilation on Token featuring: Surgeon, James Ruskin, Planetary Assault Systems, Lucy, Rodhad, Karenn, Inigo Kennedy and CTRLS, Ø [Phase]. Token has been a reliable and persistent label since 2007, finally getting wider acknowledgement during the recent increase in techno’s popularity, but lost none of it’s vision or integrity. A good example of the old saying “If you throw enough shit, eventually some of it will stick”.

Expect tough club/ warehouse tracks built for big rigs. I’m sure you know the score if you’ve read this far. Head over to the SoundcCoud player and preview the album in full where Ø [Phase] opens with an infectious, driving funky shuffler with ‘Insectoid’. Then Lucy gets creepy and bleepy. CTRLS bangs out woody kicks for a hypnotic builder that has a bleepy breakdown then kicks back in with frenzied intensity of dancefloor wrecker ‘x.y’. Planetary Assault Systems’ ‘The 808 Track is an exercise in percussive minimalism that recalls elements of Plastikman’s ‘Spastik’. Surgeon’s recent extreme gurn inducer ‘Fixed Action Pattern' is on here and all.

You get the picture; bangin’ spaced out techno extravaganza. Is it just bedroom DJ’s that buy this stuff on vinyl these days? Cuz whenever I’ve seen any of these guys play out they’re always playing digital. Or maybe labels just make them to give to the artists so the artists can give a copy to their mums to prove they’re not just sitting in their bedrooms all day in their underpants smoking weed and twiddling knobs.
