Daniel Lanois is one of those amicable dudes who's happy to stay behind the curtain while all the important faces of innovative music do their thing: he's been associated with Brian Eno and Jon Hassell. Now he gets to experiment on his own terms with 'Flesh and Machine', which shows how deftly he's absorbed sounds as wide as avant-garde and IDM. Instrumental and beautiful and totally Lanois! Never mind the rest of those experimental posers, huh?

A real thing of beauty. Following on from Belladonna and the Omni box set . This stunning album brings together ambient atmospheres , percussion and sublime pedal steel guitar . It flows wonderfully from track to track. Lanois uses the textures he's created in the studio to great effect . His command of melody is the centrepiece for me , subtlety weaving in and out of your consciousness as you listen . I'm still catching little details each time I play it. I was lucky enough to see him perform live during the Flesh and Machine tour ,hearing some great extended versions of the tracks .
I adore this album, highly recommended.
