7/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 31 October 2014
Sound artist Francisco Lopez returns this week with another album of field recordings captured at locations in the USA and Cuba between 1999 and 2007. The list of locations reads thusly - Cuba: Sierra del Rosario, Cajio, Siboney, Cienaga de Zapata National Park, Pico Turquino National Park, Granma National Park, Baconao Biosphere Reserve, Humboldt National Park, Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Preserve, Guantanamo / USA: Sandia Crest Mountains (NM), Algodones (NM), Louisville (KY), Loganville (GA).
What that means for the listener is an album-long track of meticulously blended ambience, alive with birdsong and insect chatter and strange buzzing drones, that drifts ambiently along to itself for ages. It's a soothing listen, although those who like music on their CDs might find themselves scratching their heads, since this is pure environmental textures and atmospheres, with a focus on peaceful rural locations where all the tiny details of the natural environment are unobscured by man-made interruptions.
