- The Slow Cyclone by Soft Hearted Scientists

Soft Hearted Scientists return this week with another album of their crisp and quirky psychedelic pop, like a 21st century cross between The Byrds, Syd Barrett and Harry Nilsson. This is their sixth album and they've opted to go for an ambitious hour-long 24-track song cycle in four parts, allowing them to throw some instrumentals and short interludes into the mix.
It's far too grand a project to properly do justice here because there's so much to listen to and it's not the only thing I have to write about before the weekly update is mailed out in a couple of short hours, but my first spin through has been an enjoyable experience. The songs are charming and hooky with an unabashed '60s influence and none of them outstay their welcome, with only one track on the whole album running past the five minute mark. The dreamy melodies and chiming guitars are expertly observed and the amount of effort that must have gone into constructing this multifaceted epic must have been considerable. If you're into quirky retro-pop like the stuff they put out on Fruits De Mer, this'll be right up your street.
