London rapper Kate Tempest offers up a 12" of her new single "Circles", a loopy and gleeful tune that is both euphoric and eerie, juxtaposing Tempest's unique flow with flat, sluggish beats. Along with the original, this 12" serves you remixes from experimental indie artist Micachu (without his Shapes) and Mike Skinner of the Streets. Now that is an endorsement.

Kate Tempest's new LP 'Everybody Down' has propelled the Londoner from arty but acclaimed performance poet (with a Ted Hughes Award under her belt for 'Brand New Ancients') to UK grime golden girl, and 'Circles' is the third single to come from that album, a record so universally lauded that at the time of writing it's shortlisted for both the Mercury and Dead Albatross prizes. Not only that but it inspired one of my favourite customer reviews ever submitted to our site.
On this 12" you get two tracks, 'Circles' and 'The Truth', in their original versions on side A and then remixed by Mike Skinner and Micachu respectively on the other side. They're both good tracks, showcasing Tempest's smart, articulate and approachable wordplay, energetic beats and woozy blurred melodies. The remixes keep the vocals intact and reframe them in new textures. Skinner's is my favourite of the two with cheeky little sample of divas and harmonicas, big synth strings and a busy electronic beat. Cool remixes but if you've not got the album yet then that's what you want to be getting first.
