The Sleepover Series, Volume Two by Hammock

Hammock are an instrumental/post-rock band usually toiling in the same fields of twinkling guitar abandon as Explosions In The Sky and early This Will Destroy You. 'The Sleepover Series' gives way to their more ambient inclinations, with droning soundscapes that recall Stars of the Lid and aim to treat insomnia. On 'Volume 2', Hammock concentrate on giving the sounds a reasonable amount of space and pay no attention to traceable melodies. Thank you and goodnight.

Ambient post-rock epicness is the order of the day here as Hammock return with a brand new album. This time we have a double (yes double) CD of sprawling, heart wrenching ambience that they have done so well with past albums like 2010’s ‘Chasing After Shadows...Living With The Ghosts’ which caught my attention way back then. This is music to really lose yourself in so if you like short 2 minute punk songs then look away now. As with other acts of this genre ie. A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Stars Of The Lid etc. Hammock make the sort of music that would probably soundtrack the end (or beginning) of the world, if such a thing actually had a soundtrack.

‘The Sleepover Series...’ is a much more subdued affair than Hammock’s past material with a gentle throbbing of ambient drone that forms a ‘Ready Brek glow’ around your body that warms you to the tips of your toes. I thought that a double CD of this kind of stuff might be a little too much to take in but fear not, once you dive into it there’s no going back, it will pull you deep down, never to return from it’s heavenly depths.
