Thirteen years is quite a hiatus, but that's how long it's been since Birmingham industrialists Godflesh's last album, 'Hymns'. Officially reunited in 2010, 'A World Lit Only By Fire' remains true to the band's original sound and is the follow-up to the 'Decline and Fall' EP which came out in June. Available on vinyl or cd.

9/10 Ian Staff review, 08 October 2014

Mister Broadrick and Mister Green have been away for some time but here they return with their first album in thirteen years, a lot has changed musically in that amount of time but Godflesh have stuck well and truly to their punishingly heavy industrial guns and made an album of what they do best. You can always rely on this brummie duo to keep making music that always satisfies fans of more experimental industrial rock music, since their debut album way back in 1988 and have amassed a loyal following (myself included) that has stuck by them no matter what fashions come and go in the interim.

‘A World Lit Only By Fire’ is the sound of Godflesh at a maturity but still as fresh sounding as the day they began creating this glorious noise. ‘New Dark Ages’ starts us off with that pummeling chunky groove that we all know and love and has been debuted on their recent tour with Loop, Broadrick’s crushing dropped tuned riffs are killer all the way through this album, complimented perfectly by Green’s rumbling bass lines while ‘Life Giver Life Taker’ has that discordant sound that made the classic ‘Streetcleaner’ album sound so haunting. Godflesh have always straddled that fine line between too experimental or dark for the more trad metal fans and too heavy metal for the more industrial noise crowd but that’s always been the draw for me, never really fitting into a more specific genre just adds to the mystery and keeps Godflesh sounding timeless with every new record released by them.
