Another American living in Berlin (the place must be littered with US & UK electronica ex-pats), Stewart Walker returns after a six year break with this future-techno release based heavily on live instruments and noises from performances, Re-workings of post punk basslines and guitars seemingly nabbed from early 90's shoegaze are put through a heat haze of scratching. Zithers and oddball ethnic instruments are plucked and this luxurious folky sound is married to stripped down and bare techno.

- Ivory Tower Broadcast by Stewart Walker
This is an unusual album of techno-fied electronica. Dark and lush. Walker has come up with a sonic brew that I'm having a hard time trying to explain. Its easy on the ear but at times hard to get a hold of its tail and be able to say exactly what it is. Made to be listened to at night, its a maelstrom of sonics, fired forth by laid back beats. I can hear John Carpenter in some of the synths, particularly on the eerie soundscapes of 'Gone at First Light' which sounds like it could soundtrack some terrifying horror film. My favourite track though (and I'm really messed up with the titles here attempting to review it from a stream (not actually in or by a stream you understand)) is what I think is 'Candycoated', this reminds me a lot of To Rococo Rot with its delayed bass notes and Mouse on Mars with the skittering dubby electronics.
Elsewhere there's some warm Boards Of Canada-y 80's infected synth scape and oddball techno squigglings. The final track 'Rose Machine' sounds like Mount Kimbie at half speed with glacial synths peering over slo-mo bass and drums. An interesating, challenging listen.
