MNDSGn is a hip-hop producer who makes beats for the Klipm0de crew. It's pronounced "mind design", by the way, which should be totally obvious but for some reason isn't. 'Yawn Zen' is coming out on the revered Stones Throw Records, so this guy is serious business. He can be considered quite the hip-hop naturalist, having spent most of his life in forests and woodlands and having to break free of a cult his parents were members of. 'Yawn Zen' offers up a fresh perspective on instrumental hip hop and the places it comes from.

An LA-based producer crafting a laid back and mostly instrumental brand of hip-hop, Mndsgn (pronounced "mind design", real name Ringgo Ancheta) has an interesting backstory. His parents were members of the Phillipine arm of the Aum Supreme Truth Cult in the '80s but were forced to flee the country when things took a turn for the terroristy, ending up in rural New Jersey where the young artist grew up on the outskirts of a commune without electricity while his dad worked as a neuroscience researcher.

Having hitch-hiked to Philadelphia and learned to make music with a friend's sampler, Ancheta headed west to LA where he refined his airy sound, full of slo-mo beats and subtle sound design, finding himself on the mighty Stones Throw for this debut LP. It's a woozy, gently paced affair which mixes Gonjasufi-esque mogadon soul mumblings and crisp head-nodding FlyLo-meets-Screw trip-hop. While it doesn't go anywhere fast, the vibes are consistently warm and carefree and there's all sorts of subtle little melodic details which you barely notice at the time but get lodged in your head for hours. Very pleasant and easy-going ear candy to help you de-stress with your choice of intoxicant after a long day.

Great album! Consistently imaginative beats with inspired lo-fi vocals occasionally. On record the textures behind the music really come out and give a spacious atmosphere to the sound. A fantastic project from a great LA based producer doing something different. Haven't been able to keep it off my turntable perfect chilled vibes. Similar to Samiyam and Silk Rhodes perfect for a summer afternoon with the friends or even just to wake up to. A definite buy for an beat appreciator who's bored of the same old shit.

Mndsgn (AKA - Mindesign) has an uncanny ability to create & craft such beautiful soundscapes; 'Yawn Zen' certainly does not fail to impress & goes above & beyond expectations. The unusual textures that flow throughout this album bring peace & a sense of serenity - the perfect music to chill out to for any time of day! My personal favourite song from the album is 'Camel Blues' for it's simplistic, yet poetic verses & crisp synthesizers - also the music video made to accompany the track is very cool.
