Middlemarch is a collaboration between pianist Dimitris Avramidis and ambient soundscaping fellow Ross Baker. Like Grouper melting her guitar into atmospherics, or the grandiose gestures thrown off in the middle of A Winged Victory For The Sullen's ambient passages, 'Wolf Hall' offers a droning representation of a traditional composition. Avramidis piano work is in the forefront of 'Wolf Hall', with the sustained electronic work of Baker filling the backdrop with dreamy, enveloping layers. 'Wolf Hall' is one of those ambient records that takes you to a specific place and time; it's like listening to piano in a distant room, fifty years ago.

This latest edition on Time Released Sound is from the duo of Middlemarch, featuring pianist Dimitris Avramidis on piano and ambient soundscaping fellow Ross Baker on electronics. It's a winning formula, with Avramidis's plaintive ivory-tinkling providing an understated melodic backbone for Baker to drape his subtle drones, rumbles and tone manipulation.
In places it pretty much just sounds like solo piano, while elsewhere the additional sonics are more prevalent, particularly on the fifth track (doesn't seem to be a tracklist) which is full of birdsong and submerged, inverted melodic smudges that must've been piano once. Sometimes the piano is slow like Harold Budd, sometimes Dimitris tinkles all over the place in big sweeping runs, but the general effect is always very tasteful and meditative. As usual with TRS you've got the choice of a regular priced digipak CD or an insanely lavish but quite expensive deluxe handmade limited version.
