It's been 5 years since 'Tunnel Blanket', and what Texan rockers This Will Destroy You have to show for it is pretty immense. The band are still proudly flying the post-rock flag, probably from the top of a windswept Alpine mountain, or something similarly epic. Time has not lessened the power present in the loud climaxes, nor has it dimmed the shimmering breaks - it has evolved them into studio wizards, with Eno-esque techniques creating vivid sonic expanses. To make the obvious remark, this may well destroy you.

Another Language by This Will Destroy You

8/10 Ian Staff review, 10 September 2014

I do love it when a band invent their own musical genre and it’s not at all surprising that Texans This Will Destroy You are often tagged with the old “post-rock” moniker, so they now often refer to themselves as “doomgaze”. Now I know a lot of you are probably sniggering at this new made up musical phenomenon but actually this tag fits them quite well, this new album ‘Another Language’ is the perfect cross between super heavy doom laden Post-rock with the melodic melancholy of all things shoegaze. The two extremes interlink very well with most tracks going from sparse gentle guitar and piano that build to an enormous end-of-the-world-esque crescendo.

While so many bands follow this gradually building formula, TWDY take that idea and take it to mountainous heights with crashing drums and metal guitars, this is basically taking what Mogwai/Explosions In The Sky/Godspeed You Black Emperor do but then turning the volume right up to 11. ‘Another Language’ is breathtaking, uplifting and cinematic without being too obvious and boring, a giant of an album!
