Doom purveyors Haikai No Ku provide screeching metallic riffs and plenty of misery on 'Ultra High Dimensionality', the follow-up to last year's 'Sick On My Journey'. Comprised of five tracks that take up forty minutes of playtime, 'Ultra High Dimensionality' is an unmoveable slab of psych and doom, played on crushing guitars with rarely modulated riffs, and complemented with resolute drumming. It recalls a better produced Les Rallizes Denude and a slightly more gentle Sleep.

- Ultra High Dimensionality by Haikai No Ku
9/10 Mike Staff review, 28 August 2014
Haikai No Ku are back with a second album of heavy psych-doom riffing following last year's 'Sick On My Journey' (a sentiment I can sympathise with as a childhood sufferer of travel-sickness). 'Ultra High Dimensionality' sees the super-trio churn through five slow and distorted tracks, only two of which dip below the nine minute mark, in a gnarly cosmic wall of searing wah-fuzz heroics anchored by a relentlessly trudging rhythm section.
Bong dude Mike Vest on guitar is the main focus though, teasing out heady repetitive shapes in hypnotic passages of downbeat psychedelia that sometimes take the simple, slow repetition of bands like Lungfish and Earth into Sleep-y blown-amp territory, while elsewhere he goes into brain-scouring Heads-ish wah overdrive and ghostly feedback squeals. I think this is more immediate than his other band, though - compared to their album-long jams these sub-10-minute numbers are actually fairly concise.
The songs are doled out patiently, slowly, and mercilessly heavily, but there's also a kind of ecstatic lightness to the screaming, crackling walls of distortion, particularly evident on the positively uplifting 'Void In Aimless Flight', whose fist-pumping snail-stomp brings to mind Harvey Milk's sarcastic (but amazing) take on hard rock 'The Pleaser'. If you like doom, distortion and marijuana, this'll melt your face.
