R.E.M. stepped up to perform on MTV Unplugged twice: once in 1991, coinciding with the release of their first alt country record 'Out of Time', and again ten years later, around the time of 'Reveal'. These two performances show a stripped back, completely acoustic incarnation of an alt rock band that was often murky with their guitars and full of fuzz. The 2001 performance, now available on its very own vinyl release, includes performances of many a classic, including "Losing My Religion", as well as performances of old tracks that rarely got this kind of soft rock treatment -- "So. Central Rain" is given a particularly new vibe. Michael Stipe refers to a handful of his songs as "beautiful" and "real good", the ever modest rock star that he is.
