Even Thurston Moore thinks cassettes are cool. The ex-Sonic Youth guitarist is releasing the space rock songs that comprise 'Sun Gift Earth' on Blank Tapes ahead of his new solo record, 'The Best Day'. Apparently he's singing to a spacecraft on "Rosetta / 67p Churyumov-Gerasimenko", and other than Spiritualized, I can't think of a better artist to sing to a spacecraft. The cassette's flip side features "Rebellion of Joy", an experimental, noisy, and definitely disorientating instrumental. These compositions feature eclectic contributions from John Moloney, of New Weird America outfit Sunburned Hand of the Man, as well as Samara Lubelski playing violin.

I'm wrapping up my week's reviews with this intriguing cassingle from that guy who used to be in that band, Thurston Moore. He's got his recent live line-up of Keith "Hush Arbors" Wood, John "Sunburned" Moloney and Samara "Samara Lubelski" Lubelski and on this tape is playing two space-themed numbers that are quite different from one another. First the seven-minute 'Rosetta/67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko' sees Moore crooning away to a spaceship over some smoothly gliding violin and crisp trebly riffing that recalls his former outfit, a nice little slow-builder but perhaps a little overlong and meandering.
After that we get 'Rebellion of Joy' which is pretty different, a gnarly and rhythmic noise rock instrumental with pounding discordant guitars and neanderthal drums that almost brings to mind the primitive metallic clatter of Pussy Galore, but with filthy stoner elements and passages of shimmering twinkles to build a bit of tension between the grunting distorto-bursts. I like this one more than the first track but neither is terrible.
7/10 Rockville Customer review, 29th August 2014
Not a review, but just a comment on the review. I don't think the mentioned line-up is the most recent line-up. On the Belgian Pukkelpop festival (15 August 2014) Thurston played the first gig with his new band that includes Steve Shelly and Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine). It is with this band that Thurston Moore recorded his new album "The best day" that will be released 21 October 2014.
