'Lost Reworks' features remix contributions from ambient artist Unkwon, singer-songwriter Jenny Wilson and Toydrum, among others. Even Trentemøller has a go at reinterpreting himself.

The inevitable remix EP for Trentemoller's recent LP 'Lost' was initially disappointing - just when I thought that the trente had reworked Jack and Kate's sickly smooching on the Island, his pounding post-punk rework of 'River of Life' enters the Norman airwaves. This release from the Danish producer has retained all of his gothic electro style despite being torn apart by all his friends. How kind of them. With so many producers tugging at the reins, it is a relief that the sleigh is still very much intact, and no doubt there is a massive grin on Father Trentmas' face (or at least, a hint of a grin. Does he grin?).

While the atmosphere is consistent, the EP showcases a fair few musical styles but with a firm centre in 80s-era darkwave and synthpop. There are indie-rock leanings on both Trentemoller and T.O.M. And His Computer's remixes of 'River of Life', followed by swaggering swung toms on Brighton-based duo Toydrum's re-imagining of 'Come Undone'. You start to notice an inconsistent level of variation at this point, sometimes hearing a fresh instrumental layer but at others just being hammered by the same beat patterns and drum sounds. Refreshers come in the form of Jenny Wilson's version of 'Candy Tongue', which delivers broken beat ambient techno and ethereal vocal slices, a style mirrored by Copenhagenian (?) Unkwon, albeit with a garagier edge akin to Synkro or a more polished Burial.

The main problem here is that the style hasn't diverged quite enough from the original album which can get pretty monotonous, especially with such a dark dreary tone present at all times. However, Lost Reworks serves its purpose well - keeping us partying like an '80s Depeche Mode gig.
