8/10 Jack Customer review, 12th February 2015
"Finding Fela" (2014 release; 119 min) is a documentary about the life and music of Nigerian artist and activist Fela Kuti, better known as simply Fela (long before Madonna made the one-name artist fashionable). As the movie opens, we get archive footage from a 1970s performance, and from there we get a crash course on Nigeria's history since it gained independence in 1960. We are then introduced to the surprise Broadway hit that was "Fela!" in 2009, and go back 2 years to see how that production came about. From that point on, the documentary mixes up Fela! production interviews and clips (from its performances in Lagos), along with tons of interviews of Fela's family, manager and artists, and of course further concert footage.
