Ensemble Economique's Brian Pyle and the lovely Felicia Atkinson combine their hearts and minds into one to construct an astral journey that promises to be a real meditative blend! This collaboration hungrily circles the bloated-corpse that was once called ambient techno for inspiration and flies away full of fervour and imagination. Naked Island will be delivering something magical here that should appeal to all those that love light ethereal majesty pressed onto hard heavy wax.

8/10 Mike Staff review, 13 August 2014

Supergroup alert! Naked Island is the duo of two characters who usually fly solo, Brian "Ensemble Economique" Pyle and Felicia Atkinson alias Je Suis Le Petit Chevalier. Together they make a mysterious concoction, with two side-long tracks which take their cues from ambient techno, with dully throbbing beats and wistful spoken vocals buried under layers of softly gliding synth drone.

On side A is 'Deep, Transcendent Waves of Golden Light', which lives up to its name with its uplifting synth swells and almost whispered vocals, drifting softly along in uplifting fashion for the first half before descending into tape-echoed fever hallucination territory towards the end before slowly devolving back into the spoken word emptiness where it began.

Over on side B we've got 'Play It As It Lays', which is more hazy and indistinct than the first side, a gentle fug of creaking, scraping drones hang over sampled live drums, dreamily low in the mix, in a gradual crescendo of puzzling tone-mulch that has a strangely soulful feel to it. All the tiny buried sounds in this track are making me want to turn my stereo up louder and louder, and that feeling of the music always being just out of reach lends this side a really dreamlike feel. Fascinating and immersive stuffs on both sides here.
