It’s not really fair for me to review this. Galaxians, a.k.a Leeds based duo Matt Woodward & Jed Skinner, are good friends of mine and my opinion is totally bias in their favour. Myself and Matt Woodward even share a small press 12” label called Stargaze that have put out two previous releases for the duo. I basically think they’re genius.
These guys are keeping the electrofunk dream alive with a style harking back to the golden age embracing both machine and pre-machine based boogie, funk, disco and house productions with overt enthusiasm and glee inspired by the likes of West End and Sam Records which explains why Brooklyn label Dither Down may have stepped in to help out with this EP.
So, here we’re treated to four super hot (mastered by HERB FUCKING POWERS! DAYUM!!!), super raw productions from the duo recorded by the excellent Ross Halden at Ghost Town studio. Each one a killer. Opener ‘Ducket$z’ opens the EP strong with a uptown uptempo jammer that warbles like never before. ‘Strictly Business’ brings the tempo down to classic boogie pace and teases with some fusion inspired solos and classic piano house vibes. Flip it and ‘Skydive’ really treats with it’s fusion of electrofunk, percussive disco and balearic vibes, a unique party proposition that’s impossible to deny. Last up is band favourite ‘Visual’ that really nails the boogie to the back wall with a perfect slowjam. This beauty is outrageously smooth.
