Well wouldn't you know it, The Inspiral Carpets are back. Now with original singer Stephen Holt in tow replacing the departed Tom Hingley, “Spitfire” is the first single to be released from their new LP which like many records by returning bands is eponymously titled. Can it be any good? Well we've not heard soundclips yet so the jury is out! Still, I reckon there's still a huge fanbase which will ensure this sells out pretty quickly.

Inspiral Carpets are back! And I'm reviewing their new single! Big time m8!!!!

So, lads reformed a while back (2003) and have recently reunited with original singer Stephen Holt for their first new album in two decades. 'Spitfire' is the first single and it's pretty much what you'd expect from the 'Madchester' stalwarts. The recording and the general vibe has a bit of a demo feel which seems slightly at odds with previous outings but all the fundamental elements are in place and I reckon it'll satisfy if not impress the diehard Carpetheads out there. Can't say I'm that enthused myself but I was more of Monday's man myself.

Flip it and 'Controller' fairs slightly better mainly due to it's upbeat, almost punk rock tempo and delivery. It's quite the little stomper.
