'Par Hasard' translates into 'by chance', which is the common theme of this collection of avant-garde and experimental classical compositions, made by a host of renowned sound artists. Each track on this compilation utilises piano (or piano by some description) but leaves some element of the performance up in the air, allowing for compositional potentialities unforeseen in the writing and arranging. Often, this sense of the unexpected is catalysed by the artist, such as Duchamp's decision to "draw notes from a hat". This method leads to a sporadic record, sometimes bringing about ambience and at other times producing a dissonant but traditional piano piece in which it sounds like an alarm's going off. The collection includes four suites by the iconic sound artist and philosopher John Cage.
