8/10 Mike Staff review, 13 August 2014

I've got a whole fistful of 7"s on Emotional Response to write about this week. This is the new label from the dude who brought you 555 Records, now relocated to Arizona. On this single (which comes complete with an 11-song download) are two tracks each from the northern Arizona garage rock scene.

On side A we've got the Shindaggers, who've been around for seven years but never released anything until now. Their two songs are a lot of fun, stripped back proto-punk influenced garage rock that's got the simple vigour of the Milkshakes and the swagger of the Stooges with a quite 'Damaged'-era Black Flag guitar tone. Total filth. I like it.

Over on the other side Kickback$ take things in a slightly mod/northern soul influenced direction, on 'Lady Luck' but flavoured with some chunky guitar riffing a la Dirtbombs/JSBX. 'Perfect Sin' heads down a more straightforward garage-psych direction with simple rhythms and hefty Link Wray-ish guitar distortion. I hadn't heard these bands before but they're both displaying some good old-fashioned garage rock chops here.
